On both the front lines and the home front, the contributions of the Greatest Generation during the war were monumental despite unimaginable hardship, which they met with unwavering resolve and a strong belief in freedom and justice.Since the war's end in 1945, the world has seen remarkable progress: Technological innovation, globalization and the expansion of democracy. Much of this advancement was built on the foundation of the Greatest Generation, and their legacy continues to shape our lives and values today.


To mark this milestone, Grand Rapids, the hometown of President Gerald R. Ford, is commemorating the 80th anniversary of the end of the war with a week-long tribute from September 1-7, 2025 to honor the heroes of the Greatest Generation.Hosted by the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation, events include a parade featuring WWII-era vehicles, a dramatic Wings of Honor flyover, film screenings, lectures from renowned historians and more.Learn more on the Greatest Generation Celebration 2025 website.To mark this milestone, let us not only celebrate the end of the war but also let us strive to live with the same integrity and courage that defines the Greatest Generation.



Signature Events

Honor Parade & Wings of Honor

📅 Monday, September 1 (Labor Day) | 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM 📍 Downtown Grand Rapids

Step back in time with a grand Honor Parade, reminiscent of the celebration 80 years ago at the end of WWII. Watch as era-authentic civilian vehicles, military equipment, veterans, Rosie the Riveters, Scouts, and more take to the streets of Grand Rapids. The parade will conclude with a breathtaking Wings of Honor flyover, featuring historical WWII aircraft from across Michigan, including those built at Willow Run.

🔹 Best Viewing Locations: Ottawa Avenue to Monroe Avenue along Lyon Street, Monroe Avenue to Pearl Street over the Grand River, ending at Scribner Avenue behind the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum. Afterward, gather at Ah-Nab-Awen Park or along the Grand River bridges for the Wings of Honor flyover.


Visitors to the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Museum can also enjoy a pop-up exhibit in the lobby. In honor of the Greatest Generation, original artifacts and narrative text will highlight military service, life on the home front, and presidents who served, including Gerald R. Ford. Artifacts include a mess table made by Steelecase like the one used to sign the Instrument of Surrender in 1945, and much more! The Museum lobby will be free for visitors.
